Performance Works Intake 2020/2021
Boca del Lupo is proud to steward Performance Works, Granville Island’s unique, versatile performance venue. As we complete our first year of venue management, we are delighted to welcome a diverse mix of the Vancouver performing arts community, showcasing work by longstanding users of the venue as well as newcomers, who applied for access through the 2019-20 Intake.
As a result of the 2019-20 intake, Performance Works will welcome plastic orchid factory, All Bodies Dance, Theatre la Seizieme, City Opera Vancouver, Axis Theatre, Jesse Orr, and Cookies ‘n Cream Collective with new and exciting work, in addition to returning events such as the Lindy Bout (BC Vernacular Jazz Dance Society), Winter Solstice with Secret Lantern Society, Reel 2 Real film festival, Broadway Chorus, and the Vancouver Men’s Chorus.
They will be joining Granville Island Cultural Partners such as Arts Umbrella, Boca del Lupo, Carousel Theatre for Young People, the PuSh Festival, New Works, the Jazz Festival, the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, Writers’ Fest, and the Vancouver Fringe Festival.
As we begin planning for 2020-21, we are pleased to receive applications for approximately 10 slots of 2-4 weeks each, available from October 2020 through June 2021. (Dates from July-September 2020 are set aside for Boca del Lupo’s Residency Program, bookings for weddings, or for use by Granville Island Cultural Partner organizations.)
The application process reflects our commitment to provide fairness and transparency while accommodating artists’ need for confirmed venue access in advance of production, artistic, and funding deadlines. Applications are due by midnight on June 30, 2019 and decisions will be communicated by September 2019. The online application form can be found here.
Boca del Lupo’s mission, vision and purpose for managing the venue reflects our commitment to advancing these priorities:
- To support new work – production, presentation, and creation of new Canadian and international performances
- To support marginalized artists and stories – thrilling contemporary narratives from voices that are not always adequately represented or included
- To support work that is new and innovative in form – beyond traditional or conventional formal boundaries, taking risks and experimenting
Applications need not exhibit all three or even one of these priority features to be considered, but applications that share in any of these priorities are strongly encouraged. Boca del Lupo senior staff will review applications in terms of their artistic merit and overall suitability for the venue.
Weekly rental rates and costs can be found here, including criteria for accessing discounted emerging artist rates. Sample technician and front of house labour schedules and estimates are available upon request. A list of venue technical equipment and other venue specs can be accessed here. We also look forward to collaborating with successful applicants on marketing support.
