Pietro Amato
Pietro Amato is a Montreal-based musician, composer, and music producer whose work has helped define the city’s musical landscape over the past two decades. A unifying figure in Montreal’s creative community, he bridges recording studios, live performance, and film scoring with a blend of artistic sensitivity and curiosity. An accomplished French horn and keyboard player, Amato is a founding member of The Luyas, Charbonneau/Amato, Torngat, and the Juno Award–winning ensemble Bell Orchestre. His openness and versatility have made him a sought-after collaborator for many of Canada’s most respected artists, including Arcade Fire, Tim Hecker, Patrick Watson, Owen Pallett, Land of Talk, and The Sadies. His work—whether on stage or behind the console—centers on exchange, exploration, and sonic innovation. Born in Verdun, Quebec in 1981, Amato began playing piano by ear before discovering the French horn at age ten through a community youth concert band. He later studied jazz French horn, composition, electroacoustics, and sound recording at Concordia University, where he began redefining the instrument’s role in experimental and electroacoustic contexts. In recent years, Amato has become increasingly active in film and multimedia as a composer, score producer, mix engineer, and instrumentalist. Working alongside Richard Reed Parry, he has contributed to The Iron Claw (A24), Eileen, The Nest (Sundance), and The Actor by Duke Johnson, as well as to projects such as Hajra Waheed’s Hum and Vincent Morisset’s Sound House.
